Keep the sign convention visible.
A positive vertical change means the endpoint rises along the selected horizontal run. A negative change means it falls. The same straight geometry can be described as a percentage, an angle, or a ratio.
Governing relationships
grade = Δh/L × 100, angle = tan−1(Δh/L), and slope length = √(L² + Δh²). For a non-zero rise or fall, the ratio is shown as 1 in L/|Δh|.
Conversion is not a design approval.
- Check the applicable maximum grade, crossfall, accessibility, vehicle, drainage, road, rail, and maintenance requirements separately.
- Confirm whether “run” means horizontal plan distance, chainage, or another project-specific measure.
- For earthworks, also check side slopes, benches, erosion, geotechnical stability, settlement, and construction tolerances.
